Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) welcomes the formation of the Burma’s Patriotic Military Network

18 April 2011

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) welcomes the formation of the Burma’s Patriotic Military Network with reference to the BBC/Burmese news on 18 April 2011. According to the news the network is comprises of with Army, Navy and Air Force military personnel ranging from the ranks of the soldiers to major-general. Please see the link
http://ping.fm/fHH2h

According to the BBC/Burmese, the network members units and members are

1. Hi-Gyi Island Navy Base,
2. No. 501 Maw-Bi Air Force Base,
3. Mait-Hti-La Air Force Training Base,
4. Infantry Regiment 6,
5. Light Infantry Regiment 7,
6. Light Infantry Regiment 8,
7. Main Military Ammunitions Storage Base,
8. Main Electronic Engineers Base,
9. Inn-Ma Army Base and
10. Ye-Mon Infantry Regiment 214

Myo Thein, the Director of the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) said “We are very glad to learn that patriotic soldiers of Burma are forming the “Patriotic Military Network” which we believe it will be leading towards working with the people so as to get rid of the military dictatorship system in Burma. We sincerely hope that the rest of the soldiers in the Burma military will follow steps joining the Patriotic Military Network.”

Recently on 13 April 2011, an army captain from Ka-La-Ya (91) based in Maw-Bi under the command of the Rangoon Division Military Command has fallen as the result of the shooting from military units outside the regiment which are taking position outside the Ka-La-Ya (91). Please see the report
http://ping.fm/8EMFC

Soldiers from various military bases including Ka-La-Ya (91) had called for the (4) demands since 28 March 2011 such as

1. To review the constitution
2. To amend the veteran soldiers law and increase the pension
3. To find the solution of the Burma political crisis in political means
4. To re-form the government which gains the support of the public

U Khin Maung Win, the Director of the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) said “In Burma, it is our general beliefs that if the three sons of Burma are united together and joined hands together, we can bring about the change in Burma. In 1988 and 1996, the students (the sons of the schools) were spear-headed the public and opened the new chapters in Burma. In 2007, the Buddhist monks (the sons of the Lord Buddha) were at the fore-front of the public demanding the change in Burma. Now this time, we genuinely hope that the soldiers (sons of the wars) will take the lead bringing about the peace and prosperity in Burma.”

According to the BBC/Burmese
http://ping.fm/me1qO there are reports of the clashes between the combined forces of Ka-La-Ya (709) & (710) and Rangoon Division Special Forces resulting in one sergeant had fallen and 4 injured of which 3 seriously wounded.

U Tint Swe Thiha, the Patron of the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) said “The Burma soldiers have the good reputation of standing with the public decisively when the time is necessary. When we look at the 1988 mass uprising, the Burma soldiers from army, navy and air-force joined hands together with the public and united together. As the result, General Ne Win led one party authoritarian regime was toppled leading toward holding the election in 1990 in which Daw Aung San Suu Kyi led National League for Democracy (NLD) won the land-slide victory.”

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) understands that most of the soldiers in the Burma military wanted to serve the people and the nation rather than a bunch of the corrupted dictator generals.

Daw Khin Aye Aye Mar, the Patron of the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) said “In Burma, Maw-Bi, Taik-Gyi, Min-Gala-Don and Maik-Hti-La constituencies are right to say the military towns since they are mostly hosting soldiers of the military bases. In 1990 election, almost all of the military towns voted for the Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s Party and elected the NLD MPs. Now, the time is RIGHT again and we honestly hope that patriotic soldiers will take action decisively leading towards national reconciliation in Burma.”

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) expresses our solidarity with the patriotic soldiers fighting for their rights and we would like to call for all the people of Burma to welcome the brave patriotic soldiers.

Please see the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/burmese/burma/2011/04/110418_army_network.shtml

According to the BBC/Burmese, the network members units and members are
1. Hi-Gyi Island Navy Base,
2. No. 501 Maw-Bi Air Force Base,
3. Mait-Hti-La Air Force Training Base,
4. Infantry Regiment 6,
5. Light Infantry Regiment 7,
6. Light Infantry Regiment 8,
7. Main Military Ammunitions Storage Base,
8. Main Electronic Engineers Base,
9. Inn-Ma Army Base and
10. Ye-Mon Infantry Regiment 214.

Please see the report http://www.bbc.co.uk/burmese/burma/2011/04/110415_hmawbishooting.shtml

According to the BBC/Burmese http://www.bbc.co.uk/burmese/burma/2011/04/110414_shootings709.shtml there are reports of the clashes between the combined forces of Ka-La-Ya (709) & (710) and Rangoon Division Special Forces resulting in one sergeant had fallen and 4 injured of which 3 seriously wounded.

The Conversation with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi: The ‘Value of the Struggle’

The ‘Value of the Struggle’

2011-04-08

In a program aired on April 1, Aung San Suu Kyi says Burma’s military should recreate itself as an army that serves the people, calls on Burma’s government to spend more on education, and asks Burmese living abroad not to be ‘aloof’ from their country’s struggle.

Q: I am a former political prisoner, and am now a retired principal of the Prospect Burma School in New Delhi. We formed the Panglong Preservation Coalition Network on Feb. 12, 2011 on the anniversary of Union Day and have begun activities both inside the country and abroad. Because we consider the [Burmese] people to be the guardians of our country, our objective is to make the Burmese Tatmadaw [military] a Tatmadaw that the people can love. We want to help bring about—and preserve as much as we can—a unity among all of the armed groups of our country and re-establish the Union Tatmadaw. We would like your advice as to whether or not to form this group, and whether this kind of endeavor is appropriate.

A: It is good that work is being done to bring about amicable relations between the people and the Tatmadaw. But the important thing is not to forget that that the people and the members of the Tatmadaw are the same. When we work to achieve human rights and to enjoy the benefits of a democratic system, it is because we would like all of the people—including the Tatmadaw—to enjoy those benefits and rights. If only the Tatmadaw could understand that, there would be no reason for differences to exist between them and the people. But I would like to caution you to be careful and sincere in what you are doing, so that it is not misunderstood or misinterpreted by others.

Q: Recently in the Arab countries such as Yemen and Libya, government and military leaders have allied themselves with people who have been calling for democracy in those countries. I would like to know if there are leaders like this in the Tatmadaw who would ally themselves with the people.

A: I would actually like the situation in Burma to be better than it has been in Yemen and in Libya. I would like the Tatmadaw leaders to consider and respect the aspirations of the people and to bring about national reconciliation. I also want changes to occur so that they benefit all the people, including the Tatmadaw, without causing any bloodshed. I have never lost any faith in, or loving-kindness for, the Tatmadaw. And I would like the Tatmadaw to become a military that is loved and depended upon by the people, and that is professional in carrying out its duties in accordance with the principles that were established when it was first formed.

Q: I am a Burmese national now living in Japan. The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution to take action, including military action, against the present Libyan government for cruelly attacking and killings its citizens. What should we do to get to the stage where the Security Council will take similar action against the SPDC military junta in Burma?

http://soundcloud.com/myo-thein/conversation-with-dassk-8#

A: I think that the resolution passed by the Security Council is appropriate. It could not avoid passing such a resolution while the situation in Libya was leading to civil war, with the Libyan government attacking its own citizens as if they were enemies. With regard to Burma, I would want the Security Council to pass a resolution that would lead to national reconciliation in our country. Since national reconciliation is the only way we will be able to establish genuine peace in the country, it would be good if we can make the members of the Security Council understand that, in the long run, it would be appropriate to encourage such an effort. But this will not be easy. We would have to use various methods to persuade them.

Q: I would like to ask you how you feel with regard to what is happening in Japan. We, the Burmese people living in Japan, have been thinking of helping in any way that we can.

A: I think that the resilience, ability, and courage of the Japanese people are greater than the horrifying catastrophe that has happened to them. I feel honored that the Burmese people in Japan are helping out. Although the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Burma is not able to help in material ways, we are going to send poems about the tsunami to express our sympathy and compassion for the plight of the Japanese people. I also know that the NLD in areas abroad has arranged to establish a fund and send it to Japan.

Q: With regard to Burma’s education system, there are no opportunities for children to attend school for free in Burma. In other countries, there are a lot of such opportunities. Is there anything you can do to help so that our schools can provide tuition-free schools from the primary level up to middle school, or at least up the fourth standard [grade]?

A: A country has to have a sufficient amount of funds to be able to establish a tuition-free primary school system. In actual fact, the government of our country has a lot of opportunities to build up a strong treasury—for example, a lot of income has been acquired through the sale of natural gas. I don’t think it would be difficult to set up a tuition-free primary school system if those funds were used in the education system. At the moment, our NLD is doing as much as our funds permit to help needy children and the children of political prisoners.

Q: I am an assistant editor of Junior magazine, which is published by the Burmese Women’s Union. I heard the speech you gave on International Women’s Day at the women’s seminar which was held at the border. Over two hundred women refugees from along the border attended, and listened to your speech. Afterward, they were so elated that some of them cried and others said how much more hopeful they have become. [Many] have become more politically active. But in the Burmese democracy movement, opportunities for women’s leadership are rare. Can you provide us with ways that women can be given opportunities for leadership roles?

A: For women to get involved in leadership roles in politics, they must have both strong conviction and an education. If they do not have conviction, they cannot even begin to get involved in politics. And to have conviction, they must understand that politics is linked to their own lives as well as to the lives of their children and families. For them to realize their convictions, it is important for them to have an education. They must also learn from their own experiences and lessons in life.

Q: I was expelled from Singapore because I was actively involved in Burmese politics. Now I am living in Sydney, Australia. The Burmese people who have left Burma, for whatever reason, and who have now settled abroad seem to be far removed not only from Burmese politics but also from Burmese culture. Some have even completely forgotten the Burmese language. What should they do about this?

A: One should think about whether there is something missing in one’s life if one cannot take pride in one’s own mother country—in one’s own roots. Some see Burma as a poor country, out of date or behind the times, and are embarrassed to call Burma their country. They do not seem to understand the satisfaction and value of the struggle to free Burma from the repression that is such a problem in the country. I think that if we can make them appreciate those values, this will change the minds of the people who are keeping themselves aloof from Burma.

Fifa faces investigation into Burma business deal

Fifa is the subject of an investigation by the Swiss state authorities over allegations that its financial dealings with Burma may have broken international sanctions.

The Myanmar Times, a newspaper in the pocket of Burma's junta, is said to have reported last December that the construction firm Max Myanmar has been contracted to build a stadium that Fifa funds will help to pay for.

Max Myanmar is headed by Zaw Zaw, the head of Burma's football federation, who is on the European Union sanctions list. Financial transactions with companies connected to Zaw Zaw would constitute a breach of those sanctions, possibly leading to a six-figure fine or custodial sentence.

Switzerland enforces EU sanctions through its State Secretariat of Economic Affairs [Seco], which is

seeking information from Fifa in connection with the reports. "We have requested a number of documents from Fifa about this," Thomas Graf, the deputy head of Seco's sanctions department said. "We are waiting for these documents and we will determine if there has been a violation of the sanctions on Myanmar [Burma] or not."

Fifa says it "did not infringe any corresponding regulations, whether from Switzerland or Fifa regulations". Still, the development may embarrass Fifa's president, Sepp Blatter, who was the guest of Zaw Zaw and the junta during a visit last month. While there Blatter laid the foundation stone at the Rangoon national youth academy.

An article on Fifa's website referred to this as Myanmar's Goal IV project, indicating that its Goal project of 2001 and Goal II project of 2004 have been supplemented with two further Fifa-funded construction projects.

But although documents for projects I and II are on the Fifa website, it appears to have forgotten to make public details of the two more recent projects.

Sky Blue blues

Coventry City lost £12m in the first 19 months following their takeover by Sisu Capital in December 2007. Only an £8m cash injection prevented their going into administration last week. Group accounts are more than a month overdue and they are likely to paint a depressing picture when, two years ago – with average attendances 9% higher than today – the wages-to-turnover ratio was running in excess of 90%.

Sisu is considered a pariah by some fans but if the Sky Blues did slip into administration the picture would be bleaker still: what white-knight investor would seek to pick up a club whose only assets are the expensive player contracts? Critically, Coventry do not own their stadium and relegation this season or next would be as catastrophic as it has been for Plymouth Argyle.

But there may be some encouragement here. As they are the anchor tenants to the cash-cow £113m Ricoh Arena, the stadium's shareholders – Alan Higgs, Peter Davis, Marilyn Knatchbull-Hugessen and the local council – rely on the club's survival. This should give Coventry's board some leverage in negotiating the purchase of the stadium. With £38m of cuts to its budget from central government, the council may even be a distressed seller, although its deputy leader, George Duggins, told Digger: "Not so distressed a seller that we won't get proper value for the shares." All Sisu has to do is come up with the cash.
Clubs face hard times

Championship clubs are keeping an open mind on the true impact of the £23m slide in the value of their domestic broadcast deal until the Football League's international-rights negotiations are concluded. A fag-packet calculation suggests each second-tier club will lose £766,000 a year, every League One club £115,000 and each League Two club £76,666. However, in practice, what the clubs receive is unequal and the real numbers will only be known when the facility fees – payments for each on Sky – are calculated. And here is where the bun fight will be: the most telegenic clubs will attempt to claw back the losses in guaranteed income by raising the facility fees. A £23m reduction in income cannot come without rancour.
Questionable legacy

At the Sports Journalists' Association question time on Tuesday night London 2012's chief executive Paul Deighton, left, cited two pension funds' £871.5m deal to buy half of the Stratford City retail development as real evidence of the Games' legacy. Hmm. The overall housing, retail and business development achieved planning permission in 2004: long before the 2012 Olympics were awarded to London, and would have gone ahead irrespective of the bid decision in Singapore.

Yangon, April 6 -- There was no casualty when the officials defused a hand-made bomb found on brick seat near the bus station on Sule Pagoda road last Sunday afternoon, according to the state-owned newspapers of this morning’s issue said.

“After the investigation, the above-mentioned bomb is detonated to burst in sound in the first phase and then to explode due to the vibration from the phone call at a distance in the second phase,” the newspapers further explained.

The newspapers also gave details of the items relating to that time bomb, which the officials had deactivated, as ( a ) Thai SIM Card and one old Nokia handset, ( b ) 0.25-gallon UPG red paint cans, ( C ) White C4 strong gunpowder 25 pounds, ( d ) One light blue coloured plastic case without cover, ( e ) One wired Lithium battery, ( f ) Electric detonator with two wires and ( g ) 10-amp fuse.

“Destructive elements and insurgents at home and abroad are planning to make constant bomb attacks to undermine the rule of law and to cause public panic,” the papers charged.

This is the first incident after the new government was formed on March 30 this year.
