Request for Thailand to lead ASEAN towards a collective and effective response for peace in Burma

Dear Prime Minister,
Request for Thailand to lead ASEAN towards a collective and effective response for peace in Burma
The Joint Action Committee (Burma) would like to thank you for the work the government of Thailand has done to assist refugees, activists and migrants from Burma. We also heartily appreciate efforts to further the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. This amazing Nobel laureate stands as a commendable example not just for Burma but also for the entire region of peaceful and democratic leadership. We implore you to take all measures necessary to support cohesive and strong international actions towards realizing genuine national reconciliation in Burma.
As you are aware, Burma’s military regime has created decades of continual instability, causing millions to leave out of dire necessity. The junta’s efforts to oppress and dominate populations in order to secure their own power is only furthering the rapid deterioration of the country. It has been well documented and reported how problems do not stay within borders. We’d like to urge you to also consider not just the current problems in Burma, but also the potential that exists within our country if it was truly democracy and peace, especially the advantage it could bring to the region. By supporting the release of all political prisoners and political dialogue in Burma, more will profit than just the 52 million people of Burma.
Thailand currently has the Chairmanship of ASEAN and we ask you to focus your efforts at this time on changing the direction of your country’s neighbour. We ask you to continue to show leadership on the unjust detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and that of the over 2000 other political prisoners and continue with your work to build a stronger regional and international response to a regime which denies basic human rights to the people it rules. The military junta frequently counteracts any efforts by the international community to encourage democratic and economic progression. To this end, there must be collective and targeted international efforts which state categorically that oppression by a government in Asia will not be tolerated and that the junta must work towards meaningful national reconciliation. We are thankful for your efforts in coordinating with US, EU, UN, China, India and ASEAN to reach a joint response and to work towards this. We firmly support the recent ASEAN chair statement, and urge the Thai government to use all measures possible to ensure a change in direction within Burma before the 2010 elections.
We would be happy to meet with your office at any point to further explain our position.
Respectfully,
Aung Khine Htet Aung Nai Oausai Saw Moshey Aung Kyaw Naing
